In my community you will find

Helpers of most every kind—

Firefighters, doctors, teachers, too,

Police officers and vets at the zoo.

In my community you will find

Helpers of most every kind.



I am a policeman,

With my star.

I help people near and far.

“The Carpenter”


The carpenter’s hammer goes rap, rap, rap

(pretend to hammer)

And his saw goes see-saw-see.

(pretend to saw)

He hammers and hammers and saws and saws,

(pretend to hammer, then saw)

To build a house for me.

(form a roof shape with fingers)



  1. Laminate construction paper mailboxes with numbers written on each. Have students place the correct number of envelopes on each mailbox.
  2. Put the correct number of firefighters (people counters) on each laminated firetruck according to the number written on it.
  3. Students identify the number written on each police officer’s badge.
  4. Graph- “What do you want to be when you grow up?”


1. Listen to heartbeat using a stethoscope.

2. Match community helper flashcards to the tools they use:

Gardener- seed pack or trowel


3. Community Helper Day- Ask parent volunteers to visit and share information about their careers with class.



  1. Make mailboxes using shoeboxes.
  2. Create mailbags. Fold construction paper in half and staple sides. Punch one hole on each side of top of bag and string through yarn. I write out a card for each child and the child decorates the "stamp" on it using stampers.
  3. Beautician’s mirror- Glue  aluminum foil circle on to mirror pattern and decorate border with sequins and/or rhinestones.
  4. Doctor’s bag- Students cut out doctor bag from construction paper. Add a real band-aide, cotton balls, and q-tips. Students can draw a shot, stethoscope, pill bottle, etc.

Playing with matches is only for fools.

If you see a fire "Help!" you'll scream and shout.

Dial 9-1-1.

The firefighter will put it out.
