POEMS AND SONGS:

“Summertime”

by Pauline C. Peck

The sun and I get up each day,

Blinking webs of sleep away;

We tuck the moon and stars in bed

And whisper softly, “Sleepyhead.”

And then the sun climbs in the sky,

All whipped cream clouds on lemon pie,

While I enjoy each tasty bite

Until it’s time to say, “Goodnight!”

“Firefly Hi”

by Helen H. Moore

What’s that

In the summer evening sky?

Again it goes!

Fly-flashing by!

It’s here, it’s there, it’s…

A firefly!

Blinking against the darkening sky

Is just his way of saying, “Hi,”

To another firefly.

“Bright Sun Shining Down”

(“Row Your Boat” tune)

Bright sun shining down,

Shining on the ground.

What a lovely face you have,

Yellow, big, and round!

“Good Morning. Ms. Sun”

Good morning, Ms. Sun.

We’re so happy our day’s begun.

Your bright rays chase away the gray

So we can have some fun.

Good morning, Ms. Sun.

We hope that you won’t run.

We hope you’ll stay so we can play

Outside in the warm, bright sun.

"On Top of My Ice Cream"

On top of my ice cream, all covered with sauce,

I lost my poor gumdrop when somebody coughed.

It rolled off the table and on to the floor,

And then my poor gumdrop rolled out of the door.

It rolled in the garden and under a bush,

And then my poor gumdrop was nothing but mush.

Oh, the mush was all sticky, as sticky as could be,

And early next summer, it grew into a tree.

Oh, the tree was all covered with beautiful moss,

It grew yummy gumdrops in butterscotch sauce.

So if you eat ice cream all covered with sauce,

Hold on to your gumdrop and don't ever cough!

"In My Swimming Pool"

("Do Your Ears Hang Low?" tune)

I can stay real cool

In my swimming pool.

On a sunny summer day

I can splash around and play.

When I wear my bathing suit,

I'll be cool and I'll be cute

In my swimming pool.
